Interview : ‘Kamolchat Pangtho’ New Generation Of Surrealism

Please Introduce yourself, a little background of who you are and what do you do ?

Hello, My name is Kamolchat Pengtho. Nickname is Tam from Jamo crew. I am currently working on my graduation thesis for Bachelor of Painting & Fine Art at Silpakorn University.

Tell us about how you got interested in art. Since when, and why ?

Honestly, I started since I was very young. Until junior high school, I drew some cartoon for my math assignment and drop it off. That’s when I realized I want to do art.

It is obvious that both techniques and concepts of your current work are very explicit and unique. What was it like in the beginning, in terms of your style and influence ?

My style was and still is Surrealism. I look up a lot to Pratheep khodchabua and H.R. Giger as my idol.

In the earlier days, what was the thing you specifically interested in, in general. And, how did it become relevant to your Artwork ?

During back then, it was all about robotic stuff and mechanism. Honestly, I was more into delivering the style rather than the concept or the meaning of the work. Which is different in school because my instructor taught us not to stuck with that idea. Our goal is to deliver the message and concept. Therefore, my primary focus now is to find the balance both between the style, the message and deliver them at its best.

Nowadays, both techniques and style, including the concept. What is the your interest now, and how you connect it to your story ?

It began when I was in junior year of university. During that time, I had an opportunity work on a project about ‘Modern Media Art’ which I didn’t have to paint on a canvas. It was very challenging. I couldn’t come up with any concept to work on until the last minute. I decided to throw the serious part away, and went for something funny. I put a microphone in front of different famous artworks and let people participate by doing a voiceover for them. The most successful piece among the works I chose was “The Scream” by Edvard Munch. It came out hilarous, just bizarre screaming voice by a man that makes everyone laughed. From that on, It made me realize that the concept of art doesn’t always have to be serious. Plus, I liked to watch a commercial by Tor Fino-Mena to entertain myself during study and draw a bunch of mechanical, sci-fi robot and stuff. With in all that, it has led to the thought of combining those things I like and presenting them in my works.

Obviously, your work is strongly about the belief that still cannot be proven nor unclear. What is the message do you actually want to deliver from your concept ?

Mainly I just want my audience to reduce their ego, their identity and contemplate about their belief. Some people have a strong belief in Mystery and become ignorant, attacking people who think different. While, some do not believe in such things just because they cannot see it with their eyes. Allegedly, humans has very limited senses. We barely know about our universe and yet there’s still a lot more to discover out there. For me, it is the unclear proof that allows me to think about how we, as a human, are going to unlock those mystery and seeking for a great discover with a collective force of science and faith.

Aliens and Buddhism together, it is very contradicted and unorthodox. How do you manage to keep balance of the two elements ?

It all started off from our Thai society that has various superstitions behind traditional beliefs in gods and angels. I never looked at it as a wrong thing, yet itself is very fascinating. Thai belief is very unique compared to the rest of the world. The extraterrestrial part of my artwork was inspired by the conspiracy of foreign critics and scientific theory that argued about miracles, perhaps that gods might be some kind of aliens and those images of aliens and ghosts together is a reflection of our society, that today, we live together with people who share the belief in both outer space and theism. I believe that both concepts can be relevant somehow I manage together as one.

What was the feedback to your current work from your audience or instructors? What was their reaction ?

It turned out much better than I expected. Everyone, including my instructor, encourages me to do more!

What is your expectation towards this collection ?

I have no expectation at all, for real. Lol. I just want my friends, and instructors to enjoy them. That’s all.

What is your next goal in making art after this ?

I will find new ideas relevant to my current work, complete the series and exhibit them in the future.

Would like you to leave us message towards your work now. What do you want society or your audience to receive from yours ?

In our society, we have people who believe different from us. No one’s belief is right or better than other’s. We should understand at this point to accept the difference, compromise, help each other make the world a better place.
